Springtime Spinning Success!
At last, spring is here! The ice on the water's surface is disappearing and fish are becoming more active. Predators too are livelier. To make the most of a spring day, it is worth doing a little spinning. Small silver-coloured spinners and spoons are good mimics of smaller bait fish, a popular source of nourishment on many waters.
The equipment required is dependant on the water and the fish stock. On small streams and lakes with heavy vegetation, a short rod with a short grip is recommended. It allows for underarm casts and is easy to transport through woodland. The reel should be matched to rod and line. Other equipment should include a landing net and a disgorger. A multi-functional waistcoat can be a great help in storing the large variety of smaller accessories.
One of the great advantages in spin fishing is the lack of equipment needed, allowing you to search a larger area of water. Spinners and spoons in bright colours are standard, but a small wobbler may persuade the odd perch. Floating wobblers are great for shallows. You should alter the lure retrieval rate; a simple, permanent retrieval rate will leave predators cold. Stopping the lure every so often gives it a tumbling, enticing characteristic. Varying the lure can also increase the chances of success. If you find a spot where you are sure there are fish and you get no bite, try a lure change and hit the spot again. Experimenting is the name of the game. A tried and tested method is the addition of red thread to the hook shank. It has an enticing colour and motion in the water. Try adding a bit of tinsel; it is also known to produce good results. They are various means of pepping up lures - try it yourself!
