Eel is still one of the most popular fish to hunt and eat. The reduction in the population makes eel harder to catch, but it is most definitely worth the effort in trying!
Modern methods of angling for eel have not changed much. The equipment has been refined to provide more 'entertainment.' Current legering rods are somewhat thicker than feeder rods and are known by some as eel feeders. The rods have a variety of tips, some with chemical light attachments. Generally speaking, the rods are sensitive, for reliable bite indication, and possess enough power to force large eel into submission.
As eels tend to wrap themselves around almost every underwater obstacle to avoid capture, it is advisable to select a line with sufficient strength. Particular problems might be experienced when landing eel (slimy hands and arms, etc). Old newspaper can help in getting a firm grip on your eel. Humane eel killers are also available.
Eels have highly tuned taste and smell senses. It can detect aromas from miles. Eel anglers should make the most of this fact and add scent enhancers to their bait.
The most popular baits are bait fish, fish bits, maggot balls, liver bits, etc. Basically, every bait that smells good can bring the necessary success. As with most other forms of fishing, trial and error, is the best advice. Large worms are always a good choice and can attract a variety of fish to your hook. It is advisable to store a stock of worms during the main eel fishing season. Special worm boxes and worm feed are the ideal accessories for ensuring that you always have sufficient bait to hand.
Deep holes and obstacle-rich water sections are the ideal spots for starting your search for eel. If you find one, it is likely that you will find another.
Pre-baiting can also increase your chances of success. Many match anglers, having pre-baited their swim with maggots, often find that they land a stately eel - seems the ideal method for eel anglers!
Eel angling is a versatile, challenging and worthwhile method of fishing.
Try your luck! We wish you plenty of luck!
