Pikeperch Pro

The Pikeperch, or Zander, is one of the most temperamental, yet favoured fish. It is not its simply wonderful taste but also the challenge in catching it that attracts anglers. There are a few methods to land this clever hunter. The most common methods are spinning with twisters or spinners, or static fishing with dead baitfish. Both methods have their attractions and are equally successful. As Pikeperch are very active at night, angling at night can produce extraordinary results.

Canals and large rivers often have a large stock of Pikeperch. Angling with dead bait is a particularly effective method here, and there are also specialised rods designed specifically for this purpose. These rods are also ideal for pulling large eels across stony bottoms. A stationary form of angling, the bait is mounted onto treble or double hook systems, so that it remains horizontal in the water. Use of a correctly matched chemical light float is advised. To balance the float, sinkers may be added to the system. Plumbing, to determine the depth of the waterway, is worthwhile as Pikeperch are usually found near the bottom.

As Pikeperch are wary biters, it is suggested that you wait a little before striking into the fish. To allow the fish to take line, you should fish with the bail arm on the reel open and the line placed in the line clip. When your specimen takes the bait, the line will be pulled out of the clip, giving the line free. The chemical light float makes it easy to follow the direction the fish has taken. To allow you to move around a little, acoustic alarms (such as rod bells or electronic bite alarms) are the perfect accessory. As the current in canals and rivers can be relatively strong, it can animate your bait, attracting large zander and specimen eel.

Sometimes canals have reinforced embankments which require the use of special rod holders, often used for mounting rods in boats.

Another form of angling which is highly effective when angling in rivers is legering. Legering with the rod placed at a steep angle and using fish bits as bait increases your chances of success. The rod best suited to the task should be of medium length.

An ideal set-up is: a feeder rod, length 360 - 390 cm, a normal stationary reel, a legering weight, a threeway swivel, beads and a trace with double hook. The threeway swivel is attached to the main line, a stopper is fitted and an 80 - 100 g sinker (dependant on current) is then tied to the end. A 100 cm long trace is attached to the threeway swivel's side arm. The stopper is fitted, roughly 1.5 m in front of the sinker. Use a 10 cm piece of fish fillet, placed on the double hook, as bait. The piece of fish should have a rough triangular shape, the largest end being attached to the hook - ready!

When angling with this set-up, the sinker plunges to the ground and, due to the steep angle of the rod, the line is pulled taut. The side arm and aerodynamically formed fish fillet move enticingly in the current. Use of the feeder rod gives you perfect bite indication. This rig is perfect for use when angling with 2 or 3 rods.

We hope you enjoy the hunt and will soon be a Pikeperch Pro!
