Jack Frost has not yet departed and the thermometer can’t seem to decide in which direction it should move. This does not exactly make angling any easier. Many fish species are still relatively inactive.
One species that seems to have little problem with the indecisive weather, is perch. This glutton is almost always hungry and can be found in a variety of waters. It is a very tasty fish and finds favour with a lot of hobby cooks.
Before you can prepare a lovely fish meal, you have to catch the fish first. The methods vary little from those used in summer; the most successful being spinning and angling with twisters. A little patience is all that is required – seek and you shall find!
Tests have proven that red is a particularly successful choice of colour. Ensure that you always have a red coloured artificial lure in your tackle box, or use the old trick of attaching a few red threads to the treble of your spinner.
A great method for angling in canals involves the use of small, silver or gold coloured pirks. Similar to pirking for cod, perch can be provoked to bite. The correct bait presentation will of course increase your catch.
Perch are often found in shoals – where one is found, others will follow! Perch are also a great alternative quarry for fly fishers, especially as many salmonidae are not in season. Using small streamers or wet flies is the most effective method. A quick sinking line will ensure that the streamer / fly reaches the required depth quickly. The recommended AFTMA class for preying on perch is 3-5.
The equipment needed for spinning or angling with a twister is limited. A lightweight spinning rod with a class of 20-40 g, between 2.10 metres and 3.00 metres long (dependant on water type) is required. A small stationary reel, loaded with 0.25 mm line should suffice. When angling with artificial lures, a swivel should be fitted to prevent line twist. Other equipment that could prove useful: a small bag with containers for your artificial lures, a folding landing net, bait and a variety of accessories (knife, priest, etc.).
We wish you a lot of success
