Warm Waters, Big Catfish!

Catfish are becoming ever more popular. This species is appearing in a variety of water types. The size of catch and weight are breath taking. Many anglers of predatory fish, like the Zander have switched to angling for Catfish and are having some success.

The Catfish appears in flowing water, lakes and ponds. Anyone who is interested in specimen catches should head towards the outflows of power stations on larger rivers.

The Catfish is like many other predators, in that it is active at night, and is particularly susceptible to the angler at dusk or in the early morning hours. The Catfish angler should take along a lot of patience as the Catfish has long breaks in its feeding pattern. It has been known for Catfish to go without feeding for a few days.

The variety of angling methods ranges from legering, through buoy/balloon rigs, to use of a simple spoon.

The Catfish has an exceptionally good, internal radar system that senses all movement in the water. This knowledge has led to the development of a sonic Catfish lure, better known as a 'Clonk'. The wood is between 30 and 40 cm long and has a little plate on the end. Some people may confuse a clonk with a priest. Fishing from a boat, the clonk is held vertically with the plate at the bottom. It is then jerked in and out of the water, producing a plopping sound. This sound attracts the Catfish to the bait near the boat. An excellent invention that will even entice lazy Catfish to bite.

Plenty of thought should be given in the selection of tackle for Catfish angling. A strong rod, large reel, and strong line are needed. Nothing should be left to chance because, as stated before, you may have to wait some time for a bite and when it comes you do not want to be let down by your tackle. Accessories should also be large and stable. Stable swivels, large and sharp hooks, large well balanced floats, and heavy weights are an absolute must.

Effective Catfish baits are bait fish, large spoons, spinners and wobblers. The important factors are movement and noise. There are also rattles which can be attached to bait or the line. The vibrations given off by the rattle are enticing for the Catfish.

Dead baiting can be successfully practiced on either leger or float systems. The night pilot may also provide a few surprises. Here is a short list of Catfish tackle and accessories.
