Bream Tips

Coarse angling is an incredibly popular form of angling. Bream is one of the most favoured prey. Its size alone makes it an interesting opponent.

There are many classical forms of angling available: pole angling and angling with either a feeder or match rod. The method chosen by the successful specialist depends on the type of water being fished. Pole angling is a good all-round method for angling at distances between 14-15 metres. If the fish are further out, you need to select one of the other methods: feeder or match fishing. The feeder rod is very good when angling in flowing waters, as the heavy leads and feeders used ensure that the rig remains settled on the bed. The match rod is great for angling in large lakes and reservoirs. Using a waggler float, bait can be launched to distance; the fine antenna being easily seen at distance. There are good tips available for all 3 methods; here a few to help you on your way:

Tip 1: Setting the float
After plumbing the depths, you will be able to set the float to the right height. The float can however shift on the line during the course of your angling session, meaning that you are no longer angling at the correct depth. This can first become apparent when you notice that the fish are not biting. A great little helper is insulating tape. Place a piece of tape on the rod at the beginning of your session, marking the original position of the float. During your angling session, it is then simple to check and adjust the float position as necessary. After you have finished for the day, the tape can simply be removed. This method is also an effective way of ensuring that fish meet the minimum size limit required.

Tip 2: Maintaining distance
Achieving the right distance when feeder fishing is of utmost importance. There are several methods for ensuring that you achieve this distance constantly. One of these is placing the line in the line clip, found on the reel. The problem with this method however, is that it damages the line over time. Marking the line with a permanent marker is another good method. Fitting a stopper knot (using twine) to the main line is a great method. As the knot passes through the rod guides, it creates an acoustic signal, allowing you to brake the line immediately.

Tip 3: Wind in the willows, bow in the line ?
When using a match rod for angling in lakes, you can achieve great distances. When the wind picks up however, it can create a bow in the line, causing the float to drift and making a controlled strike extremely difficult. The cure - degrease the line. To save you trying to degrease the line on the spool, simply attach a piece of foam (soaked in degreasing fluid) to the rod rest. After 5 or 6 retrievals, draw the line over the foam to degrease the line - no more bows!

Tip 4: Sunshine and floats
The change in light conditions can make float recognition a somewhat difficult task, especially at great distance. In bright light, it is even difficult to make out the high visibility red or yellow antennae. Many anglers use a permanent marker and colour their float either black or another dark colour. This works very well, but the float is then difficult to clean. A much better idea is to slip a thin piece of tubing over the antenna and colour this black. The same effect is gained but once finished for the day, the tubing can be removed, leaving your float unscathed. Shrink wrap (available in a variety of colours) is an effective alternative.

We hope you find one or the other hints helpful and wish you great success!
